For a company the size of Whole Foods, its interesting to me how divergent the quality and service standards seem to be. From a customer perspective I would never be surprised to learn it had secretively been a franchise conglomerate all along. Don't get me wrong -- I shop almost exclusively at Whole Foods and am an avid and loyal customer. I've just never felt all that good about it. Whole Foods, after all, has never been what Nordstrom was to apparel 20 years ago: ALL about the customer. Perhaps the lack of preservatives has its risks: all that mold that occasionally shows up on everything from fruit to muffins. At Nordstrom they would broke into a cold sweat once notified of such a quality breach. At Whole Foods, they have always tended to look at the whistle blower (however polite and in tune the whistle)with one of those long "yeah...so, like....who cares?..." looks. I think perhaps the Whole Foods Mantra on the inside sounds something like this:

"We're not Safeway. We're not Albertsons. So just be happy we let you in the door without charging you for it."
